Maximum Tolerated Dose

Maximum tolerated dose is the highest dose of chemotherapy that can be given and tolerated. In humans, the maximum tolerated dose might have severe side effects, and it might make the person feel like they are dying, but it doesn’t actually kill them. The point of giving a maximum tolerated dose is to kill as many cancer cells as possible. Although you may know someone or be someone who has experienced chemotherapy, it’s important to remember that maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is not used when treating dog cancer. The severe side effects that may come along with the MTD would make a dog feel so sick that no one, not the veterinarian, human, or dog would be able to tolerate them. In canine cancer, the aim of chemotherapy is to give as high a dose as possible with the fewest side effects possible.
