Anorexia

Anorexia is the medical term for “loss of appetite.” There is a human eating disorder called anorexia nervosa that is commonly referred to as anorexia, but that’s not what your vet means when they say your dog is “anorexic.” They just mean that your dog isn’t interested in eating or is refusing to eat. In general dogs really enjoy food, so when a dog is anorexic, it usually indicates a problem of some kind. Typically, dogs don’t want to eat if they are in pain, or if they are nauseous. This means that there is no “one reason” a dog doesn’t eat and you may not immediately understand how to address it. If your dog isn’t eating and it’s concerning you, call your veterinarian.
